‘Into the wild’ is one of those masterpieces that everyone should check out, regardless of where they are from or where they are going. It is the story of a passionate young man who goes against everything he’s been taught all his life to find salvation in the wilderness. And the journey is just mind-blowing. It makes you feel the emotions that wrench your heart and liberate your soul. And the fact that it is based on a real story makes it ten times more powerful.
Jon Krakauer
Jon Krakauer is the author of the book ‘Into the Wild’; he wrote a magazine article about the incident and was later compelled to write a book about the young man called Christopher McCandless. His book was later converted into an adventure drama film by Sean Penn under the same name (which is a great film and is definitely worth checking out).
Being an extremist and a wild soul himself, Jon connected to Chris’s story on a level that others could not. He understood that Chris was not an idiot with a death wish and that his journey and life had a meaning that the civilized masses could not understand.
His book was a huge success, and it took people on the kind of roller coaster that left most of them speechless.
Christopher McCandless
Christopher McCandless was the young man who became a legend after his story got out. He was an extremist from the start, got good grades, and was a star athlete. But there was something that made him stand out.
He left his entire life behind to look for something that had a higher meaning. His journey was about killing the false being within; to do that, he took the most extreme route he knew.
He went solo backpacking in the Alaskan Bush. Hiking in Alaska is not that new; people do it to this very day. But when this 22-year-old walked into the wild with nothing but a rifle and a bag of rice, he was trying to do more than to survive.
He was seeking salvation in the wilderness, the kind of liberation the civilizations poisoned with corruption could not give him.
Around the time when he ventured into the wild, he was reading a lot of Tolstoy. He wasn’t just a kid seeking a thrill; he had beliefs and firm ones at that.
As a child, Chris loved reading books by Jack London. His favorite book, The Call Of The Wild, by Jack London (also a great book and a movie to look out for), inspired him to head north. It is a book about a dog who finds his true self and purpose in the Alaskan wilderness.
His journal entries show that he was having a great time; he was happy. He traveled with vagabonds, ate what he could find, met new people along the way, and most importantly, lived. Something he hadn’t been able to do all his life.
Chris firmly believed that he did not need money to be happy. He believed that he could be above the claws of society and experience life firsthand, not the filtered version that had been spoon-fed to him all his life.
People thought he was crazy, but he was not crazy. He was just braver than most. Sometimes, it’s not the best thing to be, though. But Chris was content with what he had done and accepted his fate rather than running from it.
Into The Wild
‘Into the wild’ is something that sticks with you. If you connect with it, you will never be able to get it out of your system.
It changes how you look at life and makes you realize how fragile life is. I’d want to share many things, but I wouldn’t want to ruin this masterpiece for you. So, only read ahead if you’ve actually read the book or watched the movie.
Chris died young, but he died a hero. Regardless, he could have lived had he been prepared enough. The book is breathtaking, and so is the movie.
The most important lesson here is that skills have utility. You should constantly be acquiring and improving your skill set. If he had known how to preserve the moose, he would not have died.
The magic bus is almost a pilgrimage now, where young hikers go to this very day to pay their respects to Alexander Supertramp. They leave their journals there and experience the ambiance of a life unlike any other.
Chris was always so full of life, and so is his story, even today when he is not with us. If you’re a hiker, you should consider visiting the bush at a not-so-threatening time of the year.
Christopher McCandless will never really die because we’ll carry him with us in our hearts, a place where he can be awake forever. And we’ll honor him enough actually to live a life worth remembering.
